your thoughts stay yours end‑to‑end encrypted

A journal is one of the most personal things you can create. memorist treats it that way. Your entries are encrypted on your device before they go anywhere, and only you hold the key to read them. Not memorist, not Apple, not anyone else.

You don't need to enable a setting or flip a switch. When you write an entry in memorist, it is encrypted on your device automatically. This happens in the background every time you save. There is no unencrypted mode.

Normal entry creation — encryption is invisible

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means your entries are encrypted on your device using a key stored in your iOS Keychain. Your encrypted data syncs to the server automatically — but the server cannot read it. The data is decrypted only on your devices, after you authenticate.

In practical terms: if someone accessed the memorist servers, they would see scrambled data. Your entry text, event descriptions, tag names, and photos are unreadable without your personal encryption key.

Your data syncs automatically from the moment you start using memorist. Creating an account (via Sign in with Apple) ensures you can recover your data if you switch devices or reinstall the app. Your encryption key syncs via iCloud Keychain, so your other authenticated Apple devices can decrypt your data seamlessly.

You can review how your data is protected by going to and tapping Privacy & encryption under the Your Data section. This screen explains how end-to-end encryption works in memorist and confirms your data protection status.

What to know about memorist's encryption

No one at memorist can read your entries.
The encryption architecture means that even the team behind the app cannot access your content. This is by design.
If you lose access to all your devices and iCloud Keychain, your data cannot be recovered.
Because only your devices hold the decryption key (via iCloud Keychain), losing access to all authenticated devices means the server data is permanently unreadable. This is the tradeoff of true end-to-end encryption.
Your content and photos are encrypted.
Encryption covers your entry text, event descriptions, tag names, and photos. Some structural metadata — like timestamps and durations — is stored separately to support sync and sorting, but your actual content is always encrypted.
memorist does not use your data for advertising, analytics, or training.
Your encrypted content is never processed, scanned, or analyzed on the server side.
